Seabourn Cruise Smoking Policy

Dear Client,

This is a lightly edited email we received from Seabourn recently about their new smoking policy.

We are writing to give you advance notice that we will soon be implementing changes to our onboard smoking policies to better align them with the wishes of our guests. These changes are being made for the comfort and convenience of all our travelers, in response to surveys conducted during the past year, as well as ongoing comments from our guests and their travel agents.

The new smoking policy takes effect on all ships starting on the following dates (as well as any combination cruise spanning these dates):

  • Seabourn Quest: 11/28/16, Buenos Aries – Valparaiso
  • Seabourn Encore: 12/4/16, Athens – Dubai
  • Seabourn Sojourn: 12/5/16, Dubai – Singapore
  • Seabourn Odyssey: 12/7/16, Lisbon – Ft. Lauderdale

Smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere inside any Seabourn ship at any time, including on the private verandas of guest suites.

For guests who wish to smoke, there will continue to be designated areas:

  • On the starboard half of the Sky Bar on Deck 9 (Seabourn Encore Deck 10) including the bar stools
  • On the starboard half of the open terrace aft of The Club on Deck 5
  • Smoking of cigarettes, pipes and cigars is permitted on the open terrace aft of Seabourn Square on Deck 7. This is the only area on board where pipe and cigar smoking is permitted.

Smoking of water pipes, glass pipes or other smoking devices is not permitted on board. Smoking is not permitted on open decks during fuel bunkering operations in port. Smoking of electronic cigarettes is permitted in guest suites, as well as other designated smoking areas.

The revised policy will be posted on our website in the section entitled FAQs under the heading “Is Smoking Allowed?” It will also be printed in the daily Seabourn Herald on board all Seabourn ships.

We thank those of you who have taken the time to advise us of your opinions about our smoking policies.

Sincerely,

Seabourn

Seabourn in Alaska | 2017

Great news! One of the very top small luxury ship cruise lines – Seabourn – is returning to Alaska. Seabourn Sojourn is a great ship and you can read my review of her below.

Seabourn says about these new cruises:

Click Here for Seabourn’s 2017 Alaska Info

On Seabourn, you will experience all the iconic wonders of Alaska: the towering virgin forests along the Inside Passage, the thunderous calving of glaciers and impressive humpback whales breaching in the Kenai Fjords. You will stroll the plank catwalks of Ketchikan’s quirky Creek Street and marvel at the colorful, Russian-costumed New Archangel Dancers in Sitka. But with Seabourn, you will also step ashore in tiny Klemtu, British Columbia, where the Tlingit townspeople will great you face to face, proudly display their ceremonial finery and familiarize you with a heritage thousands of years old. They will glide up close to Misty Fjords’ glittering waterfalls in a Zodiac, and paddle a kayak on a wildlife-spotting expedition in breathtaking Tracy Arm. This is the Seabourn Difference, a uniquely human-scale experience that will transform their personal voyage into an unforgettable adventure in Seabourn’s Ultimate Alaska.

Our veteran Alaska expedition team will supplement Seabourn’s award-winning hospitality staff throughout the cruise, offering insights about the wildlife and destinations in lectures and on open, un-crowded decks. The optional Ventures by Seabourn™ Zodiac and kayak excursions, curated by Seabourn’s Manager of Expedition Operations and Planning, Robin West, will deploy right from the ship,

In addition, Seabourn’s skilled culinary staff will take full advantage of the region’s seasonal bounty of fresh produce and seafood to prepare exceptional meals meeting the exacting specifications of world-renowned American chef and restaurateur Thomas Keller.

Each of our new 11-, 12- and 14-day cruises will include:

  • Amazing itineraries featuring marquee ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan
  • The hidden gems of the Alaska Inside Passage
  • Optional Ventures by Seabourn excursions
  • Guidance from our onboard Expeditions Team
  • Complimentary Seabourn All-Weather Jackets
  • Inspiring Seabourn Conversations with special onboard guest speakers
  • Opportunities for frequent wildlife sightings from the ship and shore
  • “Caviar on the Ice” deck party and other special deck events

Seabourn Cruise Line and Seabourn Encore Update

Clients and Guests,

Here’s today’s update per my conference call with Seabourn’s president and the head of Virtuoso’s cruise program.

Of course, the new ships Seabourn Encore (December, 2016) and Seabourn Ovation (2018) which will join the current 3 relatively new ones, Seabourn Sojourn*, Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Quest

Remember, many of Seabourn’s cruises participate in Virtuoso’s Voyager Club program.

Encore & Ovation News

  • Encore will have 1 more deck than the other
  • Basic footprint will be the same
  • All crew will come from the other ships
  • Designed by Tihany
  • Visit Seabourn Encore’s microsite for more.

And usual seabourn amenities

  • Cuisine directed by thomas keller (with tk branded restaurant on quest coming in 2016)
  • UNESCO partnership with visits to 170 sites and sponsorship
  • Personal massage moments
  • Getting to know the guest (you) by your name
  • personalizing your bar
  • all restaurants are included in your cruise fare

And Seabourn’s new Ventures program makes better use of their cool marina with kayaking and Zodiac options on various cruises (currently on Quest) in Scandinavia. That’s a cool way to see the fjords!

Luxury Travel | 10 Places I Would Go in 2014

Only ten places? That will be hard but 10 seems to be a popular number so I’ll try to whittle the list down.   Here then are 10 places I would go to, because they’re fabulous, hot, fun, historic, fascinating, spectacularly beautiful, offer awesome food and wine, have a top hotel or resort to crash out and where we can work with a great local partner to bring you unique sightseeing and learning opportunities.

India | I just went for my first time in May but I want to go back. Perfect if you’ve never traveled anywhere, and outrageous if you’ve been almost everywhere like me.  The people, architecture, daily life, food, spirituality, yoga, cows, monkeys – all an incredible feast to your senses.

jaipur elephant
jaipur, india

Normandy | June 2014 will mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. You can experience this area by land (we offer excellent traditional châteaux to stay in and superb guides and we’ll pick you up in Paris).  Or you can take a 7 day river cruise round-trip from Paris. Combine with Brittany and the Loire.

Amalfi Coast | The ultimate honeymoon getaway are these villages on the cliffs above the Mediterranean not too far from the Naples airport such as Ravello, Positano & Sorrento. Enjoy probably Italy’s freshest produce grown in the sun drenched area, awesome pasta and limoncello. The hotels are studies in spectacular tile work reflecting the sparkling sea below. Capri is right there too.  Fly home from the north and visit Umbria and Tuscany.

Bora Bora & Le Teha’a | Maybe this is the ultimate honeymoon getaway instead.  The reports from my clients who have been are always off the charts.  On either of these islands lose yourself into your hut sitting on top of their respective lagoons. I’ve not yet been and it’s at the top of my list.  While “Bora” is more famous and has two ultra-luxury resorts, Le Teha’a is bit more authentic and more secluded.

Bali | I’ve been wanting to go back here since I went there in 1994 when I worked for Seabourn.  The culture is fascinating, the hotels and resorts sybaritic.  It’s just so different from Western life, and much calmer than India. Be prepared to slow down a lot. Bali makes Mexico seem fast paced.

Seabourn Cruise Line | Just take me anywhere on the Sojourn, Odyssey or Quest.  Seabourn continues to be one of the top cruise lines, if not the best, for world travelers who demand the best service and best food & drink — at sea or on land.  Next time I think I wouldn’t mind a trip to the fjords of Norway.  I love visiting the Land of the Midnight Sun in the summer where it’s easy to stay up almost 24/7.

seabourn-spirit-caribbean-cruise
Seabourn Spirit docked in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Fredericksted, February 2012

Silversea Cruises | You can take me anywhere with Silversea too.  With Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea completes the trilogy of ultra-luxury cruising with smaller ships.  And that’s easier now that they’ve expanded their fleet to include adventure sailings in the Galapagos with Silver Galapagos, throughout the polar regions with Silver Explorer and the Pacific with Silver Discoverer launching in March 2014. And their first ship, Silver Cloud, was recently refurbished.

Sea Dream Yacht Club | I’m dying to take a cruise on Sea Dream. It’s all about the water and I love being in and around a lot of it since I’m from Miami Beach and Los Angeles. The ships have only 100 guests and everything revolves around being outside – on the deck or in the water.  I’d be perfectly content to spend 1 or 2 weeks in the Caribbean this winter with SeaDream.  They even offer Glatt-Kosher cuisine for private charters which by the way is a GREAT way to celebrate – say a 60th birthday? Kosher is optional.

Japan | This is not a popular destination for my clients but it’s always seemed so interesting to me.  I think it’s the history, the style and the hospitality that intrigues me around Tokyo and Kyoto. I’ve met many Japanese at my annual luxury travel conference and I’m sure if they’re anything like the folks back home it would be a great trip. The hotels (including Hoshinoya in Kyoto), lodges and ryokans appear to be unique and worthy of a visit.  Stay 7-10 days and combine with the beaches in Thailand or  Vietnam for a fun vacation!

Dublin at Trinity College
Dublin at Trinity College

Ireland | I got a taste of Dublin a year ago when I accompanied my partner John there on a business trip. Not sure I’d recommend that you go in February (no lines though at Trinity College for the Book of Kells), but a good 7 to 10 day trip any other time would be pretty wonderful.  The Irish are super friendly, like to have a good time and the countryside is absolutely beautiful I’m told – and have seen virtually.  Staying at a castle and touring the Ring of Kerry sounds very fun. And I can vouch for the excellent whisky selections and Guinness in Dublin.

All the best for a wonderful 2014!

Seabourn Sojourn Review | July 2013

Image

My last review of a Seabourn ship was just over a year ago when I sailed in the Caribbean on Seabourn Spirit.  That ship was Seabourn’s second to launch back in about 1990 and will soon be retired.

The Sojourn is Seabourn’s 5th and launched 3 years ago. I sailed on her then on a 2 day  “industry inaugural” and that review can be found here,  Seabourn – Still the Best of the Best.

And yes, Seabourn still impresses me. The dining is fabulous, the service excellent, the ship is beautiful (it’s the most stunning sailing anywhere) and there are always interesting people to meet, whether they tell you the truth about what they do for a living or not.

Actually since I’ve been cruising — and that goes back to when I worked for both Royal Viking Line and Seabourn — I’ve run into some famous British entertainers onboard (that was on the Spirit last year), and before that a famous American author of steamy novels, a Southern pig farm magnate, an heir to a paper cup company and the president of a beer company. Years ago on RVL I ended up with a pen from the U.S. Senate although I don’t think the fellow who gave it to me was in fact a senator.  And I’ve met some very fun under the radar good people, and characters, from all walks of life. Oh, and I think I met a spy as well.

Seabourn Sojourn Staircase
Looking up the Main Staircase

Seabourn has remained consistent throughout, and that’s good because when you’re on vacation, you want some insurance that your expectations will be met, or even better, exceeded.

Seabourn does needs to eliminate smoking in suites* which is usually not a problem but can be if you’re located next to a heavy smoker. Ask my traveling companions from Baltimore about their neighbor. And their ship management needs to stay more engaged with their guests.  Not sure why they’re not – but fortunately it did not trickle down to their staff in Seabourn Square (reception), and in the restaurants and bars, who were quite excellent.

The itinerary on this cruise was busy — 7 days and 6 ports.  Stockholm (beautiful), Tallinn (very charming and interesting but too crowded), St. Petersburg  (the churches and palaces are fascinating, the crowds again intense and the citizens still a bit un-relaxed from Soviet rule), Helsinki (the Rock Church was the highlight) and Copenhagen (like Stockholm, very beautiful and good food.)  My next cruise will have more than 1 day at sea though so I can enjoy the ship more!

Helsinki Highlights, Arts and Architecture | Helsinki | 14 July 2013
Length: 7 hours
Description

Helsinki is a modern European cultural city whose urban cosmopolitan lifestyle exists in perfect harmony with nature. Surrounded by the sea and its own exotic archipelago, Helsinki offers visitors an endless number of possibilities. Throughout its 450-year history, Helsinki has existed in the crosscurrents of the East and West. The colorful layers of history can be seen everywhere. Today’s Helsinki is also a city of the future. Its modern architecture, cutting-edge design and high-technology have attracted international recognition for the city. Unique lifestyles and urban subcultures are all a part of this international metropolis.

Our day begins with a drive from the harbor to historic Senate Square, built in neo-classic style after Helsinki became the capital of Finland in 1812. From there, we will pass by the shipyard and boat harbors, and see the Suomenlinna Island Fortress and “Diplomat Town” where most of the foreign embassies are located. Leaving the city along the coastal road, we will have a beautiful view of the archipelago and travel through “Tech Town”, the University village in Otaniemi, and Tapiola, the “Garden City”, both of which were designed by the famous Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto.

We will then make our way to Hvittrask Museum, built in 1902 and former home of the famous Finnish architects, Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren, and Herman Gesellius. Famed for its architecture, Hvittrask’s buildings are made of natural stones and logs from the surrounding area which is forested and situated by a lake. It is an exhibition center for Finnish art and handicrafts. We’ll visit the magnificent house of Eliel Saarinen, and have some free time to wander about and experience the serenity of this beautiful place before moving on to our wonderful luncheon venue.

We’ll enjoy a delicious 3- course repast complimented by wine at the Kulosaaren Casino restaurant. Acclaimed for its traditional cuisine and atmosphere, the restaurant boasts the most beautiful sea view in Helsinki.

After lunch, our return to the pier takes us back to the center of Helsinki and past the stainless steel monument of composer Jean Sibelius, a patriot whose most famous orchestral piece was appropriately named Finlandia. We will also pass the Olympic Stadium, used for the 1952 Olympic Games and the statue of the “Flying Finn”, runner Paavo Nurmi. We’ll continue along Mannerheim Street, where we will see several important buildings such as Finlandia Hall, the National Museum, and the Parliament House. We’ll make a short visit to the glorious Temppeliaukio or Rock Church, carved out of solid rock and topped with a copper dome before our return to the pier.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual with comfortable shoes recommended. Easy to moderate walking required up some stairs and inclines at the Museum. There will be areas for those who do not wish to walk to explore while waiting for the rest of the group.

Please Note
This itinerary is subject to change without notice due to local conditions or other considerations. This Voyager Club Event is not transferable and cannot be used in conjunction with another sailing. Seabourn | Best Way to Book a Cruise

One can book a cruise with Seabourn Cruise Line* basically three ways:

  1. Direct with Seabourn
  2. With a discount travel agency (online or not)
  3. With a full service travel agency

What’s Best for You?

I trust this blog post will help you to decide which is best for you to do.  I firmly believe that choice is what it’s all about, and depending on what your goals are, you should book accordingly.

As a note on my background, I am now a full service travel agent specializing in ultra-luxury cruises (such as Seabourn, Crystal, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea) and customized luxury vacations. In the 90s I ran Seabourn’s air/hotel department in San Francisco.

Direct with Seabourn

If you’re the type of person who know pretty much what you’d like, and prefers working direct with suppliers in general, then this is the way to go.  It’s easy, too.  And you know that the cruise line will be financially stable.

But you likely won’t get any assistance in looking at smart (i.e. better value) alternatives to airfare, hotels and insurance. You won’t get shipboard credits or other Voyager Club type promotions, and you won’t get unbiased advice  on the plusses and minuses of different cruise lines. And if something goes wrong, you won’t have an advocate working on your behalf.

With a Discount Travel Agency | Online or Not

If price is what it’s about, and you’d like the absolute cheapest cabin, then book with a discounter. These agencies typically offer a rebate of up to about 10% off the price of the trip (via shipboard credit), and make their margin on the extra commission they are paid by the cruise line.   However, with their reduced profit, don’t expect much in terms of service as the sales motto is “next please!”

So if you know exactly what cabin or category you want, don’t need a price analysis of airfares, pre-post cruise hotels, touring pre/post,  insurance.  And you’re not too concerned with the overall level of service after the agency has collected your money, this might be the way to go.

And I’ll repeat the paragraph from the booking direct section above:  ” …you likely won’t get any assistance in looking at smart (i.e. better value) alternatives to airfare, hotels and insurance. You won’t get shipboard credits or other Voyager Club type promotions, and you won’t get unbiased advice  on the pluses and minuses of different cruise lines. And if something goes wrong, you won’t have an advocate working on your behalf.”

With a Full Service Travel Agency

The easy way to describe the benefits of a full service travel agent is to look at both descriptions above and then consider the following as part of the mix.

Full a full service agency, you can expect:

  1. On many sailings a complimentary membership in a cruise club (i.e. our Voyager Club), an onboard credit and/or a complimentary shore excursion, a welcome cocktail reception, a host to welcome you aboard and arrange social gatherings for the duration of your cruise
  2. Consultation and unbiased advice on the best ship for your particular needs, either in general or  for a specific vacation
  3. Recommendations for the best hotels, upgrades, free breakfasts, hotel credits and introductions to our contacts there to make sure your stay is going to be great
  4. Help in arranging private shore excursions with the best guides in the business, and tailored to your specific interests.
  5. Assistance with customizing a full itinerary before and after your cruise
  6. Analysis of the cruise line’s insurance, air and hotel programs, and better value options.
  7. An advocate on your behalf should something on your vacation go wrong or need follow-up.
  8. An ongoing relationship with your cruise consultant. He or she will likely bend over backwards to help you before, during and after your cruise with anything and everything. I know that I do.
  9. A bon voyage phone call, email or text to make sure you don’t have any last minute questions and to just wish you well
