Edinburgh & London Report

I visited Edinburgh and London this past November and here is my report, in photos. The hotels stayed in were The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel, a grande dame set above the railway station in Edinburgh.  And in London, another Rocco Forte hotel, Brown’s Hotel, a classic central Mayfair establishment which has been around longer than any of us.

I flew over in Delta’s quite nice Business Class, Delta One, and back in Upper Class with  Virgin Atlantic.

Rocco Forte Hotels Update

I just received an update from my very friendly Rocco Forte hotels sales rep today on what’s up with this top group of European hotels. Rocco Forte is one of my top “go to” companies in Europe for a few reasons:  Location of hotels, historical buildings with contemporary interior design, top service & great restaurant options. Many of the hotels are quite busy with locals so you can be sure you’ll be a part of the city, instead of just a tourist.  At least I like that.

Our agency is a top producer for Rocco Forte and as such have the connections to make your stay ‘above and beyond’ your expectations.  And you’ll receive our normal complimentary perks, i.e. breakfasts, credits & upgrades as noted in each link below.

Rocco Forte also has a very favorable family plan too with a discounted 2nd room for small children. I’ve found this quite popular especially in both Florence & Rome.

London, Brown’s Hotel
The oldest hotel in town, the lobby is classic dark wood in a very central Mayfair location. Rooms are very contemporary and light, with new studio suites quite modern.

Edinburgh,  The Balmoral
A bar with about 500 whiskies to choose from. And it’s above the train station and they’ll come and get your luggage. Perfect central location.

BerlinHotel de Rome
In former East Berlin, in a historic bank building.  Rooftop restaurant with 360 views of the city. A more masculine approach than many others in the Rocco Forte Collection. A few newer suites quite modern though.

Florence, The Savoy
I’ve stayed here and the location is perfect if you want to walk out the door and be in the city.  Just over 100 rooms, the smallest of all RF hotels. Very modern (but not over the top) in keeping with Florence’s always trendy position on top of an incredible 15th century base. And if you book in conjunction with Rome you’ll likely get a discount on both (minimum 5 nights last I heard).

Rome, Hotel de Russie
I was just here in October. The best location in Rome (really!) and they have a wonderful staff. This is one classy, fairly grand (but small) hotel with it’s own private garden and adjacent restaurant. It’s about a block from the Piazza del Popolo, the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps),  Gucci , Prada et al, and it’s just below the Pincio for a fabulous walk to the Borghese Gallery.

Sicily, Verdura Resort
Almost brand new resort with beach, golf (3 courses) and near the ruins of Agrigento. Siciliy is amazing (yes, I’ve been there twice) and I’d probably combine this with a stay on the eastern side of the island (Taormina) and maybe Palermo, too.

Dear Clients & Friends,

This blog includes some of the best suggestions for small hotels, luxury estates and manor homes.  See our other blog for special events happening through 2016 in England, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain & More.

CAMERON HOUSE on Loch Lomond (Scotland)

Cameron House stands in a stunning position on the shores of Loch Lomond just 45-minutes’ drive north of the city of Glasgow. This is a charming Scottish country house that has developed into an important Scottish golf resort, spa and sailing and yachting center. The house has maintained its Scottish-manor feel, with a cozy restaurant and bar and lots of tartan. The spa is state-of-the-art and has glorious views of the Loch. The 18-hole Carrick golf course has views of the Loch throughout, from the “high road” to the “low road.” Peppered with bunkers, the course incorporates one of the greatest water hazards in golfing experience—the great Loch itself! Rooms are very spacious, some with four-poster beds. Many bathrooms have walk-in showers, and most have views of Loch Lomond. This is a perfect place to start or end a tour of the Highlands; Inveraray Castle and Glencoe are just to the north.

THE PRINCIPAL MADRID (Madrid)

The Principal in Madrid has the air of a private English club, and the location, at the lower end of the Gran Via just a short walk from the Prada Museum and many restaurants, is one of the best in Madrid. The hotel’s public spaces are located on the sixth and seventh floor. Reception is on the sixth floor, and is the “private club” part of the hotel. It is very tastefully decorated, with comfortable corners and bars and private terraces for lunch looking onto the Gran Via and Madrid. In the summer, the seventh floor terrace comes into its own, with different areas for dining and enjoying a drink or having lunch under colorful umbrellas. This floor is open to the public and locals come up here to enjoy a drink after work. There is also an area reserved exclusively for guests of the hotel, with sun beds, a cooling fountain and showers. Bedrooms are on floors two through five, and are well thought out and very quiet, with triple sound insulation on the windows. Some bathrooms have walk-in showers, and many of the rooms, including junior suites and suites, provide unique panoramic views down the Gran Via. This hotel is a sister hotel to the Grand Hotel Central in Barcelona and the Hotel Unico in Madrid and is overseen by the same management.

Maybourne (Claridge’s) Hotels | Insider Update

Another wonderful small and very luxurious hotel company is the Maybourne Hotel Group.

I just had lunch with Andrew Jeffries, their Sales Manager based in the USA. And here’s a quick update on their 3 very special London hotels.

Claridge's LobbyClaridge’s is one of London’s most storied hotels, practically a second home to Buckingham Palace’s residents when they ran out of rooms. They even let me stay there about three years ago but alas I did not spy any Royals. Photo. The rooms are either a very old fashioned British style or a fabulously chic deco one. Suites designed by royal favorite Linley. In Mayfair walking distance from Hyde park or the designer shops on Bond Street.

The Connaught was recently and completely remodeled and the rooms and baths are quite modern, although many rooms retain a traditional feel. The hotel is quiet, done in dark wood, and the lobby small so you can sneak away to your room without the paparazzi bothering you .

Maybourne’s third hotel is The Berkeley, located in Kensington near Harrod’s and The Royal Albert Hall. The more casual and family friendly of the group, the suites and rooms were stunningly designed by Robert Angell, . Check out the large rooftop pool and London’s very happening Blue Bar, designed by David Collins. It’s where I had my first B&B.

Of course Josh Friedman Luxury Travel offers a complimentary breakfast, a food & beverage or spa credit of L.60 and an upgrade if available. And, of course and most importantly, a VIP intro from Yours Truly.

In Honor of London and the Royal Couple!

Royal Wedding News

Dear Readers,

I’m passing on the gossip from the UK from one of our excellent partners on the ground in London, England, Scotland and Wales. Wherever you’d like to go in the world we specialize in luxury customized vacations to suit your wishes.

Thanks to Andrew and the team at Luxury Vacations UK.

News of The Royal Wedding in 2011

I expect you have all heard of the fantastic news of the 2011 wedding plans of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Prince William and Kate Middleton gave their first interview on British television last night, they were both extremely relaxed. Kate was wearing Prince William’s late mothers engagement ring, which is set with a large sapphire within a circle of diamonds. Both seemed very excited about the wedding as expected.

Few brides remain unscarred by the ordeal of organising a wedding at just a few months’ notice. But when your wedding venue is a toss-up between the cathedral and the abbey, your fiancé is second in line to the throne, the guest list is packed with heads of state, and a sixth of humanity is expected to tune in to watch you say your vows live on television, there is only one thing for it: you have to hand the whole thing over to the control of the in-laws.

Fortunately for Kate Middleton, the Windsors have a team of in-house wedding planners who can put on a show like no one else and are famous for an unrivalled attention to detail.

Within the Royal Household, the Lord Chamberlain’s Office will take the lead in organising the wedding but Clarence House, where Prince William has an office, will also have a major input, as will the Government, Westminster Council and the police. The Queen is expected to have the final say on key arrangements.

She has just cancelled the Buckingham Palace staff Christmas party, displaying an awareness that the Royal Family must not be unnecessarily extravagant in difficult economic times. However, for the wedding, she will want to stage an event that can be enjoyed by the nation.

When she married in 1947, the Queen used 300 clothing coupons to buy the material for her dress and most of the cost of the wedding came from savings George VI had made during the war from the Civil List.

There has been speculation that William would not choose to marry at St Paul’s Cathedral because it was where his parents’ doomed marriage began. However, Westminster Abbey will be full of difficult memories; the funeral of his mother was held there. The Abbey became the royal wedding venue of first choice last century. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were among the royals who wed there.

If William and Miss Middleton wanted to revert to the earlier tradition of more intimate royal nuptials, an outside bet would be the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks. His close friend, Nicholas van Cutsem, married there last year.

If the couple dream of a congregation full of friends and relatives they may be disappointed. Certainly many pals, like Thomas van Straubenzee, whom he has known since prep school, the nightclub promoter Guy Pelly, the van Cutsem brothers, Jamie Murray Wells, the founder of Glasses Direct, and Richard Branson’s daughter, Holly, will attend. And there will be many relatives, including numerous distant cousins from European royal households, whose faces will be as familiar as their place in the family tree.

But there will also be Commonwealth heads of state, politicians and, possibly, even newspaper editors, who cannot be described as part of the social circle of the Prince, his bride, or their families.

The Middletons own a children’s party business, Party Pieces. But for all their expertise (you can get a “princess party ultimate party kit” for just £21.40) they are unlikely to be called upon to choose the fizz for the wedding breakfast.

The wedding does mean that there will be huge interest in London, England, Scotland and Wales.

For example London: Buckingham Palace and two potential wedding venues St Paul’s Cathedral (where Prince Charles and Lady Diana were married) and Westminster Abbey. England: Weekend home of the Royal family at Windsor Castle. Wales: William is the future Prince of Wales and King and he is also stationed with the Royal Air Force in North Wales….and lastly, Scotland: St Andrew’s University is where Prince William and Kate Middleton met while taking a degree in the history of art. I’m sure UK-Wide tours will be popular in 2011, therefore Luxury Vacations UK have the knowledge and resources to help you plan extended tours of the entire UK for you and your clientele.
