Terre Blanche | A Personal Report

Dear Clients and Friends,
I hope you find this report from one of our partners helpful in your vacation planning. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for further details.
Josh

What a trip…

Just got back from a dreamy long weekend at Terre Blanche, a wonderful resort/destination nestled between Provence and Cote D’azur.

I landed in Nice airport on a Thursday afternoon and the Terre Blanche Mercedes class S was waiting for me and in less than 40 minutes I crossed the gated walls of the property, 1 ½ the size of Montecarlo.

The grounds are so beautiful and lush, in fact, you are in the middle of a beautiful Provencal forest and the only views of human civilization are the quaint and charming towns of Fayence, Callian and Tourrettes perched in the nearby hills.

The reception area is spread with the owner’s art collection and even it is spacious and airy, feels warm, in touch with the nature and the colours of the whole village/resort match with the earthy feeling of the area.

I was escorted to Villa Provence, a two bedroom villa with a stunning terrace and plunge pool that also acts as an immense whirlpool (I counted and you can invite up to 16 friends inside!); super spacious double sink bathrooms with bathtub and walking shower, a great kitchen room with a wine refrigerator stock with the best whites, roses and champagne, a full stocked bar…all this makes Villa Provence the perfect accommodation for a large family (sleep up to 6) or two couples.

On Friday morning I played at Le Riou, one of the two Championship golf courses, and I loved it! The golf facilities are world class and any golfer of any level will feel absolutely impress with them, from the Swing analysis, to the driving range and Le Riou & Le Chateau; the 19th hole was a fun lunch at Le Caroubiers, the amazing grill at the Club House.

After a fantastic massage at the award-winning spa, we rode 4×4 buggies through beautiful trails and we arrived in a tiny local winery where the owner ‘forced” us to taste some fantastic whites and roses.

To end the amazing day, we have dinner at Faventia, the one Michelin star at the property…that was a 4 hours dinner including the kitchen tour and the long debates and fun conversations with the more than charming team at the restaurant.

Saturday was the perfect day to explore the area in a vintage Citroen 2CV so we went to the farmers market in Fayence where I found beautiful hancrafted wool ‘echarpes’ and multiple non-touristy stands.

From there we went to visit Chateau d’Esclans, home of the famous Whispering Angel (a.k.a Hampton’s water) and we enjoyed a visit followed by wine tasting, including the most expensive rose in the world, Garrus.

After this fun morning, we stopped for lunch at world famous Chez Bruno, where all the dishes are truffle based, not just flavoured but totally full of shaved truffle and even a full 60g truffle in one of the dishes…also white truffle from Alba in a simple pasta dish, really spectacular and a must when in the area.

A leisure afternoon was needed after the 10 dishes truffle lunch and what a better place that our wonderful plunge pool at Villa Provence…then get dressed to party in Cannes, such a fun town and only 35 minutes from the property.

Sunday was also spectacular, we took a private boat from Cannes to Ile Sainte Marguerite and spent the day at La Guerite, the unofficial beach club of Terre Blanche…picture the perfect Sunday, by the water, with friends and good looking people all around (favorite Beach Club of Beyonce).

Sadly, everything great comes to an end too, and early Monday, I left the property direction Nice airport (40 minutes’ drive) but with a huge smile on my face, because I discovered an extraordinary and cool destination all around the property.

Huge shout-out to Rachel David, Candice Berger, Gilles Fouilleroux and the amazing team behind them at Terre Blanche for creating such an amazing experience and make me fall in love once more with Terre Blanche.

All the best!

Carlos

Viking River Cruises Launches New Ships

News from my Viking River Cruises (& Viking Ocean Cruises) sales representative:

On March 1, 2016, Viking River Cruises launched six new Viking Longships at a christening ceremony in Amsterdam. Viking Rolf, Viking Kadlin, Viking Alruna, Viking Egil, Viking Vilhjalmand Viking Tialfi join the award-winning Viking Longship fleet, named “Best New River Ships” in Cruise Critic’s Editors’ Picks Awards.

Six prominent women from travel trade organizations across North America and the United Kingdom were honored as ceremonial Viking Longship godmothers, a naval tradition dating back thousands of years. “We are honored to have their support and their participation in this year’s celebration,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises.

The christening event marks another year of impressive expansion for Viking, and highlights our ongoing commitment to elevate the industry standards for cruising Europe’s great waterways. Four of the new Longships will sail Viking’s most popular itineraries on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers; two will sail the Seine River on Viking’s Paris and the Heart of Normandy itinerary.

Hot Hotels 2016 | by josh friedman luxury travel

In a world of many old and newer wonderful hotels, here are a few represented by a favorite partner of mine. The theme here you’ll notice is contemporary , modern and colorful. After all, my friend is French, and that’s the way they are!

For customized luxury vacation planning contact Josh Friedman Luxury Travel.

Brooklyn | The William Vale

OK, not usually at the top of my international list but check this out!  Opening April 2016 in Williamsburg. 60 foot outdoor pool and fitness center. Views of Manhattan.

Sao Paolo | Hotel Unique
Not at the top of my usual list either but the design of this hotel, along with the William Vale (above) is just stunning, and fun.  In Sao Paolo’s most upscale neighborhood. Fitness center with 2 pools. And the rooftop pool has an underwater sound system.

Berlin | Das Stue
Another stunning design hotel in a quieter location than the other top hotels in Berlin, in Tiergarten next to the zoo. Walking distance to KaDeWe. Michelin starred restaurant “Cinco” by Spanish chef Paco Perez.

French Riviera, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat | Royal Riviera
In between Nice and Monaco, a great location for pre or post cruises from either port. Very contemporary decor in an historic 1904 building.

St. Tropez | Hotel de Paris
A classic recently renovated. Very St Tropez with a suspended glass-bottom swimming pool and Clarins Spa.  7 minutes to Beach Club by complimentary shuttle.

Paris | Hotel Edouard 7
One of my favorite of this collection another modern beauty from a classic exterior. A four star couture hotel they say! Restaurant and bar with outdoor terrace. Only hotel on Opera avenue.

Nicaragua | Morgan’s Rock
This country is becoming popular. Do it in conjunction with Costa Rica or on it’s own. The little eco-resort is on a 4,000 protected acres and is only 15 bungalows overlooking the ocean and jungle. There is also a 4 bedroom hacienda on the beach. Yoga, hiking, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing & horseback riding.

Ritz Carlton Geneva | Hotel de la Paix

Now a Ritz Carlton partner hotel.

I’ve posted blogs in the past from my Ritz Carlton sales rep extradonaire Jeremy. Here’s his latest:

The Hotel de la Paix.  Built in 1865 and named, The Peace Hotel, the property has witnessed a host of historic events.  One of the most interesting is that in 1872 the hotel hosted an international arbitration panel to process the Alabama claims.  A little interesting history…the Alabama Claims were a series of demands for damages, sought by the United States government from the British government in 1869, for the attacks upon American merchant ships by the CSS Alabama and similar warships, built secretly in Britain and sold to the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War.  The room where the treaty was signed is named The Alabama Salon and in a world today with so much turmoil…I think it is kind of special to know that this new Ritz-Carlton hotel offers a legacy of peace.

With the Hotel de la Paix now flying The Ritz-Carlton flag, the property will undergo a massive guest room transformation that will elevate the 75 guest rooms and suites to a contemporary, warm and inviting boutique experience very focused on personal interaction between guest and hotelier.

The Hotel de la Paix, a Ritz-Carlton Partner Hotel:

  • While all the luxury hotels in the city are situated on Quai du Mont-Blanc, The Hotel de la Paix occupies the premier position on the street with the most gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Geneva, majestic Mont Blanc, The Jet d’Eau and the skyline of the city featuring the many marquis of the luxury brands that make Geneva a shopping paradise
  • Approximately 70% of the guestrooms and suites enjoy lake views while the remaining 30% overlook a leafy courtyard that is very pleasant and peaceful
  • Grace Kelly once stayed at the hotel and her presence is felt today as she has a commemorative suite named in her honor
  • Once the guest room renovation concludes in late 2016, the hotel will be re-launched as The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva.  Until that time, the property is operating as a partner hotel.

Geneva Insights and Recommendations:

  • Geneva is known for being the gateway to the magnificent Swiss and French countryside.  Perfect for taking in the summer landscapes or the world class skiing available at Chamonix, les Houches, La Clusaz, St Gervais, and Courchevel
  • With the most international organizations calling Geneva home; the city is known as the worldwide center of diplomacy.  Such organizations include the United Nations, The Red Cross and World Trade Organization
  • While many people travel to Geneva on business, there is a host of interesting leisure sights that are not to be missed:

o   The Brunswick Monument – The final resting place of the Duke of Brunswick who endowed the city of Geneva upon his passing

o   The Flower Clock – Located in the English Garden, this symbol celebrates the world famous Swiss watch making industry

o   Saint-Peter Cathedral – The main Protestant place of worship that was built in the 12th and 13th century

o   The United Nations Building – Originally built to accommodate the League of Nations; the building now houses the European Headquarters of the United Nations

Restaurants

While I only had about 48 hours in the city, I can definitely recommend two wonderful restaurants for your guests:

CIBUS Restaurant: Located on the Quai Gustave-Ador and helmed by the wonderful Ernesta Nobile D’Addario; CIBUS offers a warm, cozy and casual atmosphere with some of the best pasta dishes I have ever experienced

Vertig’O:  In honoring this restaurant with one Michelin Star, the inspector offered the perfect quote that sums up this amazing dining experience at The Ritz-Carlton:  “Despite its name, you will experience no Hitchcock-like fear in this restaurant, where the cuisine is the only thing likely to raise your heartbeat. The dishes are beautifully presented and deceptively simple, allowing the flavour of the ingredients to shine through.”

Crystal RIVER Cruising

Crystal Cruises now Offering River Cruises – Open for booking on November 30, 2015!

Inaugural sailings only available for Crystal Society members for the first 2 weeks.

Dear clients and friends,

I met virtually this morning with Crystal Cruises as they reviewed their entry into European river cruising.  All the details are not in including what Virtuoso Voyager Club benefits may be offered for the best in personal service and exclusive amenities, but please stay tuned. And email or call for more information.

Their first cruise is July 13, 2016 on the Danube on Crystal Mozart,. The first ship is the only one that is not a ‘new-build’ but I understand a fabulous ship.  It was the Mozart and guest capacity has been reduced and cabins enlarged.  Will now be 160 guests and  90 crew. This is the only ship without an elevator so keep that in mind for guests with physical challenges.

Itineraries | Danube’s Capitals and Wachau Valley, 10 nights (vs. the usual 7 on others) includes Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary. Sailing round-trip from Vienna includes actual cruising time (a difference from others) plus extra time in port e.g. 1 1/2 days in Budapest for instance;  2 for 1 fares from $3,645 each.

Crystal Mozart is also doing  also 11 night cruises round-trip from Vienna to Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia & Slovakia (Countries of Eastern Danube). This is combinable with the 10 night sailing for a 21 night cruise.

The NEW ships welcome 140 guests only in 70 suites, no smaller than 250 square feet.
