Chief steward, Ronald Gelmo, welcomes visitors to the Queen Elizabeth 2 as Istithmar World, the Dubai state investment company that owns the ship, outlined plans Monday to turn the retired cruise liner into a 300-room hotel, ending years of speculation about its fate, in Port Rashid, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Monday, July 2, 2012. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II launched the QE2 in 1967.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Dubai has settled on a use for the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner it bought for $100 million five years ago, with plans to turn it into a floating hotel fitted with many of the storied vessel’s original furnishings.

The ship will remain in the city state’s downtown Port Rashid facility to serve as a tourist magnet alongside a proposed maritime museum and an expanding cruise ship terminal complex, officials said Monday.

The plans are a twist on a more ambitious previous proposal to significantly overhaul the ship and convert it into a luxury hotel docked alongside one of the sheikdom’s man-made palm-shaped islands. Developers shelved those plans when Dubai’s economy tumbled into crisis.

The chairman of the Dubai state company that owns the ship, Istithmar World, said he expects the 300-room hotel to open within 18 months. Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem told reporters the company realized visitors want to see the QE2 as it originally looked, so does not expect to carry out major renovations or remove fixtures still onboard.

“We are not making major changes. We will preserve its tradition and the way it was,” he said at a news conference near the ship’s mooring. “It’s a great vessel and it will continue its journey to serve the tourist sector in Dubai.”

The ship’s fate has been the subject of intense speculation since its arrival in November 2008. Officials have long been reluctant to address questions about its future, even as it sat unused and suggestions swirled that it could be moved to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup or even sold for scrap.

This past New Year’s Eve, an event planning company hosted a black-tie bash onboard that included live music, fireworks and a laser light show. That was the first time the ship had hosted a large group of guests since it pulled into port.

Istithmar bought the QE2 from the Cunard cruise line for $100 million in 2007. The company is part of Dubai World, the state conglomerate at the center of Dubai’s 2009 financial meltdown. Istithmar has been working to reduce its debt load, and in May lost control of upscale retailer Barneys New York as part of a deal with creditors.

Bin Sulayem dismissed concerns about the cost of converting the QE2 into a working hotel, though he declined to say who was paying. Neither Istithmar nor the city-state’s profitable port operator DP World, which Bin Sulayem also chairs, are paying for the project, he said.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II launched the QE2 in 1967. Since it went into service in 1969, the QE2 has made at least 26 round-the-world voyages.

Why Sail with Cunard?

Dear Traveler,

Are you thinking of taking a cruise? a voyage? a journey by sea?  Or are you thinking specifically of sailing with Cunard?

This legendary cruise line is betting you’re just not looking for any cruise experience, and that you’re not going to just “fall into a Cunard cruise.”  They’re pretty sure that you’re looking for them.  After all, Cunard goes back to the 19th Century has quite the venerable grande dames of the seas in their fleet – Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.  And they had the QE2 for many years.

The Core of Cunard is White Star Service: white gloves at embarkation, your room steward or butler and 1 staff member per couple.  And there are the Grills, Princess Grill or Queens Grill “for pure elegance and the best accommodations at seat.”  Queens Grill suites range from 500 to over 2,200 square feet, including duplexes and penthouses.

Dining. They boast table-side cooking, carving and flambe’. And your meal is served on Wedgwood bone china, and your drinks served in Waterford crystal.  With sterling silver, of course. It’s clearly different from other lines.

On board lecturers hail from the Royal Astronomical Society and entertainers from the Julliard School.  Other speakers are ambassadors, statesmen, politicians, journalists, academics and broadcasters. And how about acting lessons on Queen Mary 2 with teachers from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Or fencing instruction on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth with equipment from Leon Paul Fencing Equipment.

In the evening?  How about a Royal Night Theme Balls? Sounds fun!  Or casino games, musical revues in the Royal Court Theatre. Or lounge entertainment, or just strolling on the open deck.

You can be married onboard or if you already have a family there are children’s’ programs.

I’m a Cunard Commodore, a small group of travel agents who have studied the line backwards and forwards and who have submitted to gruelling tests.  Happy to help you if I can.

Cunard Agent in San Francisco’s Financial District

Thinking of a cruise with Cunard aboard Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth?

Did you know that San Francisco and the Bay Area are one of the biggest Cunard markets in the USA? I’m guessing it’s because we’re a sophisticated lot that prefers an outlet to wear our tuxedos and ball gowns.

Actually that’s partially true. Have you seen the ads that have been appearing around here lately, from the San Francisco Chronicle to San Francisco Magazine?  The campaign is called Feel Famous.  The idea is that once the sun goes down and you’ve stepped out of your suite or stateroom for your formal evening out, you’ll step back in time to the Golden Era of cruise travel when anybody who was anybody sailed Cunard across the Atlantic.

Now that person can be you. Of course.

Cunard Expert I’ve been certified by Cunard as a Commodore, which means I’ve taken a battery of tests to become an expert. And I’ve visited Queen Victoria, when she was here in San Francisco [see my photos]. Plus I’ve worked for a couple of cruise lines and should be able to council you on how to make the best of your cruise vacation. I’ll also help you with the air and land arrangements before and after if you like.

Current Cunard Sale

Look forward to hearing from you and answering your questions.

Luxury Cruise Update | January 2012

January, 2012

Dear Reader,

Happy New Year! It’s that time of the year that cruise lines and tour operators get busy with their promotions to fill up their ships and tour groups!  Basically the mantra is buy now and get a deal. Or wait and pay more.  This way they cut down on their future marketing expense and share the benefit with the consumer. That’s you!

Here’s the latest information and promotions from my top travel partners.  Even though your favorite line may not be mentioned, it just means I ran out of time to include them.  Please contact me directly for details.

The best way to stay current on promotions is to join Facebook where I post quite often, or even on Twitter, which is actually very handy for this sort of thing.  My Facebook page is pretty fun though as I try to find relevant videos and articles, keeping the promos to about a third of the posts.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Here’s to a great year,

Josh

HRC Welcomes Cunard Line as New Bronze National SponsorReaders / I just found out that Cunard Line [QE2, Queen Mary 2 & Queen Victoria] has supported HRC via seven donations of transatlantic cruises over the last few years. I did know that such sailings were popular with the LGBT community so it’s cool that they decided to sponsor HRC’s fundraising events.

This October 22 {in about 2 weeks} my partner John & I will be attending their San Francisco fundraising gala as guests of Cunard, joining one of their marketing executives as well.

To help the cause, Josh Friedman Luxury Travel will be donating to the silent auction a certificate good for customized luxury travel planning, a $600 value. It would be very cool if the purchaser would use that in conjunction with a Cunard sailing, but it’s good for a land only vacation as well.

For more information on the San Francisco gala 10/22, click here.

It would be nice to see you there – and if you’re going please let me know and I hope you bid at the auction!

Below is Cunard’s press release regarding HRC’s D.C. gala.

Cunard | Watch Her Majesty The Queen Name Queen Elizabeth

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has named our newest Cunarder QUEEN ELIZABETH
spacer1x1.gif spacer1x1.gif
We invite you to watch as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II names our newest Cunarder, QUEEN ELIZABETH. The naming is a milestone in British maritime history and is a major event of worldwide interest.

Queen Elizabeth is the second largest Cunarder ever built and joins her sister ship Queen Victoria and the flagship, Queen Mary 2. Cunard is celebrating 170 years of famous ocean liner traditions and now operates the youngest fleet at sea.

Naming Ceremony
Queen Elizabeth’s public venues honour the original Queen Elizabeth in her interior grandeur, decor and style, but with modern flair. The Verandah, a new dining alternative, offers guests an experience reminiscent of dining at the original Verandah Grills onboard Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, with menus created by Exceutive Chef Jean-Marie Zimmermann, winner of a coveted Michelin star. The stunning Royal Court Theatre, with private boxes, will feature an imaginative repertoire of musical productions and Shakespeare classics. The Yacht Club, which is named after the lively entertainment space found aft on QE2, offers guests the perfect venue for activities and gatherings during the day or dancing at night, with views from its 270 degrees of windows. The Garden Lounge covered by a vaulted glass ceiling inspired by the glass houses of Kew Gardens, will host occasional evening ‘Supper Clubs’ with live musical entertainment.

Queen Elizabeth will be based in Southampton during her maiden 2011 season, offering roundtrip voyages to the Mediterranean, Baltic and Northern Europe in true elegance.

Cunard Line is pleased to announce that Her Majesty The Queen will name the company’s new Queen Elizabeth, the third Cunard ship to bear the name, at a ceremony to take place in Southampton, England on Monday, 11 October 2010.The naming will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be a major event of worldwide interest.“The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line. “The Queen launched Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1967 and named our current flagship, Queen Mary 2, in 2004. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner, Queen Elizabeth,” added Shanks.

Her Majesty was also present at the age of 12 at the launch of the first Queen Elizabeth on 27 September 1938 when she accompanied her mother, Queen Elizabeth, to Clydebank for the launch.

The Naming Ceremony will take place in Southampton on Monday, 11 October and Queen Elizabeth will set sail on her Maiden Voyage the following day.

Other historic namings of Cunard ships by British royalty over the Line’s 170-year history include the following:

  • Her Majesty The Queen, as Princess Elizabeth, launched Caronia, the ‘Green Goddess,’ in 1947.
  • Her Majesty Queen Mary, wife of King George V, launched Queen Mary in 1934 – and in so doing became the first British Monarch ever to launch a merchant ship. His Majesty King George V accompanied his wife.
  • The late Queen Mother, as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, launched
Queen Elizabeth in 1938. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret accompanied their mother.
  • HRH The Princess Margaret launched Carinthia in 1955.
